Army Establishes Stations to Watch Weather Conditions
Detachments of Signal Corps enlisted men are assigned to military stations nationwide to set up meteorological units and collect data for the Army and forecasters in Washington. Stations at Kelly Field Brooks Field San Antonio and Brownsville gather readings twice daily and send coded reports to the chief forecaster. The War Department barred transfers without Washington's orders and warned against duties conflicting with weather work essential to artillery and aviation training. Atmospheric data are vital to bombing missions reconnaissance and chemical warfare planning, with about eight hours daily required for the meteorological duties.
