Massachusetts biologist Dr. Belding will study why the scallops are unusually large this season and whether they are a deep-water species. He will also check if beds extend toward Nantucket Island. Separately, Robert Bohm of Vienna challenged Jabez Wolff of England to a 12 hour open water swimming race for $500 a side. A total of 51 horses trotted a mile in 2:10 this season.
