Police Clubs Thwart College Melee
In San Francisco a 30 officer patrol broke up a campus melee at San Francisco State as demonstrators clashed outside the science building. Eight youths and two girls were arrested amid violent disruptions during the second day of classes under acting president Hayakawa. Police and faculty leaders faced off as students, some with red and blue armbands, protested for a black studies department and minority admissions while classes continued at an 80 percent attendance in the morning and about 60 percent in the afternoon.
