Viet Cong activity alleged near Cambodian border and plane incident
South Vietnam charged Cambodian troops and public safety forces aided Viet Cong guerrillas in two border incidents near Chau Dac Province. A patrol within 100 yards of the border was hit, three Viet Cong fighters and one Vietnamese soldier wounded, and the Viet Cong and Cambodian units withdrew after 20 minutes as reinforcements arrived. A single-engine fighter crashed northeast of Saigon. U.S. Air Force pilot parachuted to safety, a Vietnamese observer is missing. Buddhist leaders debate new protests, with monks previously burning themselves in 1963. China warned it would contest U.S. aggression against North Vietnam, pledging to stand with Hanoi if attacked.
