Lockhart Texas August 28. County commissioners remove coal stoves from the courthouse and install wood burning ones to aid the government in the fuel question. Wood is plentiful and cheap, but labor is scarce and prices may rise this winter.
An order from Southern Department headquarters lists courts martial to sit at Leon Springs with officers from Harfield, Aird Bies, Red, 45th, 4th, and 44th Field Artillery units. Captains Carter McDonald Brian McGevern Jenkins Lightfoot Beckert and McGevern are named with Lieutenants Wurst Mann as judge advocate and assistant judge advocate.
The Food Administration announces new regulations for a united victory bread for the Allies. Starting September 9 bread must be mixed with 80 percent wheat flour and 20 percent substitute cereals, with rationing among allies discontinued and households urged to buy ready mixed flour or mix at home.
London dispatch reports British forces advancing near the Somme front on August 2. Troops reached near Montauban and Carnoy with strong resistance reduced by bayonet fighting and air support. Prisoners and scattered German positions indicate a continuing push as weather and terrain slow progress.
Allied tanks and armored cars disrupt German lines in a Cambray area action. Reported are many captures of prisoners including divisions and regiments, with German troops surrendering or retreating under pressure. Weather is fair and morale remains high as battles continue along a 28 mile front.
