New York, Aug. 29. The Dun & Bradstreet whole index of 31 basic foods fell to 6.94 on Aug. 24 from 7.08 two weeks earlier, and sits 6.94 a year ago. The Aug. 24 level is 45 percent below the July 13 record high of 7.36 and is down 1.8 percent for the week.
The transcript recounts Alger Hiss facing questions about past relations with Chambers during a Senate inquiry. Hiss describes meetings with Crosley, real estate leases, and the transfer of a Ford, while committee members press for dates, leases, and credibility in a perjury probe.
Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge was fined ten dollars and costs today for taking the right of way in an automobile collision here on July 27. The justice pleaded innocent through his Denver attorney Lowell White. Rutledge, who vacationed here in July, has returned to the east.
President Truman cancelled the credentials of Soviet consul general Jacob Lomakin amid a note from Moscow defending Lomakin and Kesenkina cases. The move followed a Soviet critique of U S actions over the Kosenkina and Samarin cases and framed as retaliation during Moscow talks. Lomakin’s status was announced aboard the presidential yacht at a Virginia port.

The Federal Reserve Board announced plans to reimpose controls on installment buying to ease price pressures. It noted debt surged since World War II, with 40 million American families likely owing over 50 billion for homes and consumer goods by year end. Mortgage debt rose to over 32 billion, driven by home purchases, and retail credit reached 14.15 billion, with installment loans making up about half. One in four families used time payments last year, a rise from earlier decades.
