A short verse by W. A. Crorrert recounts a playful tale of an angel and the Devil over shad and strawberries. The angel enjoys a feast while the Devil disrupts the plan by casting bones into the stream and later facing consequences for mischief.
A Southern town tale recounts Colonel Hoxie, linked to the Gould railroad, being tested by a presumptuous visitor bearing a letter. After a social bluff with polite refusals, the caller insults Hoxie and flees, pursued four blocks by the lame colonel who fails to catch him.
The article notes Jonkoping hosts the oldest and largest match factory with a 100 year history. It describes early match specimens, wood sourcing from 50 forest sections, plank and sliver processing, and box creation from tree bark. Millions of matches are produced daily and U S consumption reaches about 280 million per day.
Mr. T. W. Atkins of Girard Kansas endorses Electric Bitters as pure and effective. The tonic is claimed to cure kidney and liver complaints, purify blood, regulate bowels, and save doctor bills. Sold for 50 cents a bottle by Rice Bros. & Co. in Soledad block.
An 1684 Texan notice touts Morley Bros. balsam as a cure for flux with a customer testimonial from Mesere Morley in Austin. The ad promotes the remedy and salve for skin conditions, touting satisfaction guaranteed or money back and a 25 cent price per box, with Rice Brothers & Co. as sellers.

A long list of real estate bargains is advertised including an 1100 acre farm in Harris County six miles from Houston on Buffalo Bayou with railroad nearby, water and timber, hay from last season, and easy terms. Also multiple building lots, cottages, card press, and concrete house sales in San Antonio with names T Johnson and J W Bradley as contact points.

Delegates from counties meet August 30 1884 at county seats with representation based on votes for E J Davis in 1882. The San Antonio convention is set for September 10 1884 at 12 noon.
