Law on Abandonment Ties Texas to Family Desertion
In Texas there is no law compelling a husband to support wife or children, leading to widespread desertion cases. Associated Charities reports 224 desertion cases last year affecting 706 children, with many mothers left to fend for themselves. The article cites multiple poignant cases, including a teenage mother and a minister’s daughter, illustrating the system’s failure to enforce support and protect vulnerable families.

Johnson pleased with party platform from Texas convention
Cone Johnson of Tyler, a leading Texas Democrat, praised the Colquitt platform adopted at the San Antonio convention. He especially supported the early closing of saloons, while criticizing the platform’s stock and bond law changes as expanded beyond the governor’s intent.
