Laird says US defense budget may rise next year
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird, aboard the USS Independence, warned that post Vietnam drawdowns have driven unemployment but indicated the fiscal 1973 defense budget could climb. He cited pay raises, volunteer forces, and inflation as factors shaping budgets and called current reductions a temporary part of transitioning to peacetime.
