Viroid discovery sparks cancer disease questions

Washington reports that Dr Theodor Diener a plant pathologist at Beltsville Maryland announced the discovery of a microscopic particle called a viroid smaller than the smallest virus. He said viroids may cause some cancers and are linked to several human, plant, and animal diseases. The finding follows eight years of experiments and positions Diener as proposing a primitive RNA particle lacking a protein coat. The scientist speculated viroids could be responsible for other unidentified diseases. Officials noted Canadian and German researchers are pursuing parallel work, with Diener’s disclosure marking the first full release of the result.
