Roosevelt Sends Destroyers to Cuba Amid Cuban Unrest
President Roosevelt ordered two destroyers to Havana and one to Manzanillo after consulting Cuba's new president Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. The moves aim to safeguard American lives and property while Cuba restores order, with no intent to intervene in internal Cuban affairs. The vessels, Taylor Claxton and Sturtevant, carried about 100 men each and faced cross-ocean transit timing via the canal.
