Solon Claims Illegal Forces Debate Over Old Law
Senator Mike Gravel says the Defense Department is operating beyond the 1950 law limits on armed forces, claiming Army, Navy and Air Force exceed ceilings while the draft bill remains stalled. Gravel sent a letter to Defense Secretary Laird detailing troop counts and urging compliance with existing law. Pentagon spokesman Friedheim noted the delay stems from withdrawal timing disputes and ongoing committee discussions.

Health Aid Is Pushed by Magnuson for Child Care
Washington Senator Magnuson introduced legislation to fund most medical bills for children needing costly care. The plan offers government payments for expenses beyond 5 percent of a family's income for households under 15000 dollars, with higher costs shared by higher income families. Coverage would start with younger children and expand to all under 18, aiming to spare thousands from crippling or preventable deaths.
