Wisconsin Guardsmen March to Leon Springs in Muddy Hike
Three Wisconsin regiments, totaling over 3000 infantry, began their hike from Camp Wilson Monday morning and reached Nine-mile Hill by 10 35 AM. Only about 22 dropped out, with one exhausted soldier sent by ambulance. An army officer praised their discipline and credited training and Brigadier General Richardson. The march order placed First, Third and Second regiments first, followed by wagons and artillery. A mule in the supply train caused a comic delay as its sergeant, rider, and car exchanged a humorous solution. The brigade plans to finish to Leon Springs Tuesday while the First Illinois brigade returns to San Antonio Wednesday.
