Plymouth Church dispute ends with Hillis favor

A court appointed referee ruled in favor of Dr. Hillis pastor of Plymouth Church of Brook Ivn against Frank Ferguson former president of the Plymouth trustees. Ferguson owes Hillis 70000 with about 55000 in disputed service and expense claims rejected. In New York two German born men Hans Jacobson and Count Courant were arrested for plotting to aid von Papen by obtaining airplane stabilizer plans and confessed through Justice Department agents.

Double Present Taxes On Tobacco And Amusements

Washington Aug 2 The House Ways and Means Committee framed an 8 billion revenue bill doubling present special taxes on tobacco and amusements and increasing taxes on brokers theaters and other venues while taxing mail order houses above 100000 annual business. A 1 percent retail tax on mail order sales was adopted along with a 0.5 percent tax on Pullman seats and passenger rates. Stamp taxes remained. The tobacco schedule sets annual per-thousand and per-pound taxes by seller class with rates rising for higher sales. The committee rejected a cotton tax and Moore’s proposed 3 per bale tax.
