Schwab Clears Steel Shortage Muddle With War Board Accord
Washington April 20 2 A three week dispute between the shipping board and railroad administration over steel deliveries was resolved in a conference with the war industries board at the request of Charles M Schwab. The plan preserves priority for the shipping board except for warship construction and directs the railroads to detail steel for locomotive building while adjusting car construction to reduce total steel plate demand. Freight cars may shift to wood with steel used for trucks and frames, and full car supply is to be guaranteed for priority industries. Output of steel plates is expected to rise 20000 tons weekly by July 1 due to mill additions.
