Million a Year State Loss On Cigarette Tax
Austin reports the state loses over a million dollars yearly to cigarette stamp leakage. H A Smith, director of the tax stamp division, says licensed dealers sell tax free cigarettes to army post exchanges and officers clubs. Military personnel may not take more than two tax free packs off post, yet wives and retired personnel stockpile and re sell. Civilian post employees also buy two packs daily, slipping past checks as Maj Gen Donovan warns buyers not to leave camp with unstamped packs. Action to curb the drain is being considered.
