Smiling Pat O'Brien and the Last Fight in a German Prison
Lieutenant O Brien recounts his 1917 Royal Flying Corps enlistment from Canada to England then France where he downed two German planes before being shot down. He details capture in a German hospital, brutal mouth wound, a British flag and flying wings kept as mementos, and a tense exchange with German officers who admired his sport and resilience.
