American Forces Repel German Assault Near St Mihiel
In France on April 14 American troops repelled a German attack on the right bank of the Meuse north of St Mihiel. A force of 400 picked troops, from the Russian front, faced Americans outnumbered over two to one yet drove the attackers back to their trenches with 64 dead and several prisoners. The Germans used gas and disguise, but the ruse failed and American casualties remained light. Many prisoners were under 20 and carried rations and digging tools. A notable Italian miner from Pennsylvania killed one and captured three, then returned with more prisoners after a brief exchange, while other acts of valor were reported across the line.
