Navy Heads Plan 35-Knot Destroyers In New Ships Program
The House naval sub-committee opened the annual navy appropriation bill work, aiming for a April 28 House passage. Secretary Daniels urged two dreadnoughts and two battle cruisers. the general board wanted three battleships and four battle cruisers, with a likely compromise for two battleships and four battle cruisers. Plans cover battleships, submarines, destroyers, gunboats, hospital ships, and ammunition ships, plus 800-ton submarines. The scout cruisers target 35 knots using geared turbines and light electric drive to save coal and boost range. The 1917 destroyers would also reach 35 knots.
