Syria-based Arabs launched an artillery and mortar attack on a Jewish settlement near Jerusalem today while 2 Haganah planes bombed Arab positions outside the city. The assault targeted Layavoth Habassan, a settlement founded by Jewish ex servicemen, with aerial clashes reported at Kastel, five miles west of Jerusalem.
Fifty office girls struck against Seattle employer unions at the Labor Temple after a 10:30 a m meeting failed to settle the dispute. Picketing began after noon with Mildred Erickson, business agent, calling it a lockout. An employer spokesman warned that nonreporting workers would be fired and replaced by scab labor.
Stassen showed a strong performance in Wisconsin with notable delegate counts in Milwaukee county districts. Dewey, despite previous wins in 1940 and 1944, posted a weak showing, raising questions about securing any convention votes from the state. MacArthur’s delegates, Zimmerman and La Follette, led in the overall tally, while Kohler and O’Melia trailed in Milwaukee precincts as returns from 160 of 460 precincts were reported.
