Johnson urges NATO allies to back Eastern Europe’s new independence spirit

President Johnson told NATO ambassadors and U.S. leaders in the East Room that the alliance must balance vigilance with outreach to Eastern Europe. He praised the “new spirit” abroad, warned against reliance on old barriers, and stressed reunification of Germany in freedom. He noted NATO’s growth, economic gains since 1949, and the alliance as a real, expanding force. The ceremony honored the treaty’s 15th anniversary with remarks from former generals and Acheson.

White House hosts guest at NATO anniversary event

Miss Warrie Lynn Smith of San Antonio, guest of the first family, attended the 15th anniversary celebration of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the East Room. She arrived with her roommate Lynda Bird Johnson, daughter of the President, as the Johnsons entered. Warrie Lynn wore a sleeveless yellow dress with pearls. Lynda Bird wore a black sleeveless dress and pearls.

HemisFair Ratifies Council Pact in City Agreement

The HemisFair Executive Committee approved a contract granting San Antonio Fairs Inc. rights to use Urban Renewal Project No. 5 land for the 1968 HemisFair. The panel named 12 standing committees and appointed members, including Howell, Gaines, Steves, Tobin, and White. O'Neil Ford is set as coordinating architect with salary negotiations next week.

Kennedy buys Lincoln Emancipation Proclamation print

New York reports Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy bought a signed Lincoln Emancipation Proclamation print at Parke Bernet galleries for 9500 dollars. The purchaser, Gerald J. Shea, said Kennedy may keep it or donate it to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in Cambridge for display.

Nazi Guard Described as Born Sadist at Auschwitz Trial

Frankfurt dispatch reports survivor Maxmilian Sterner calling William Boger a born sadist who laughed as Gestapo guards kicked Gypsy women and children to death. Union backs Yarborough in Democratic governor bid

The City Council of the Communications Workers of America voted wholehearted support for Don Yarborough in his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. The 2,200 member council, representing Southwestern Bell Telephone, Western Electric and Braniff Airways workers, approved the backing at a Thursday night meeting at the CWA Hall on 121 E. Martin.
