A Honolulu led report details Hilo Hawaii struck by a sudden tidal wave with waterfront wreckage. Troops secured the harbor as families sheltered on high ground and rescue teams recovered bodies. The assault damaged warehouses, rail lines, and vehicles, while food supplies were decimated and refugee camps sprang up across Oahu and Hawaii.
An erroneous radio report claimed a tidal wave was ten minutes away and sirens sounded near midnight in Kodiak Alaska. Navy radio corrected the report minutes later and residents, some with bedding, returned home. Alaska sea frontier commander said no new wave was expected to reach Alaska or Kodiak island.
