Tax plan faces steel industry opposition in Washington
In Washington, D. C., April L—A warning that a new $799,000,000 tax program would drive independent fabricators from the steel industry was given to the house ways and means committee today by Clifford Comey, president of the Mount Vernon Bridge Company of Mount Vernon, Ohio. He said the proposed law would benefit larger companies. Dr. I. W. A. Beenhouwer of Amsterdam urged reducing the proposed tax on dividends for foreign investors from 22 1/2 to 10 percent, else foreigners would liquidate American holdings. Committeemen prepared to hear more objections as hearings near a close this week. H. H. Smith of Detroit, for the Michigan Manufacturers Association, argued corporations must meet fixed obligations and should not be taxed more than 22 1/2 percent if they have rental contracts preventing dividends until debt is paid. J. W. Oliver of New York, chairman of the tax committee of the American Management Association, proposed a net loss carry-over provision and tax credit for dividend receivers.
