In Pueblo del Manana on June 27, 1910, el alcalde and the head of police spar over a patrol wagon. Officials note a $1 million tax fund and a 150000 population while resisting expenditure on a police vehicle, joking about a public boat for West End lake as the crowd calls for reform. The discussion continues on page 2.
Associated Press reports a race riot near Harrisville on Sunday with armed white posses searching for fugitives. Luther Buckley a white man and a black man named Jones are dead. Conflicting accounts say the two negroes were either spirited away by officers or taken into the woods where a double lynching possibly occurred. Further trouble is feared as excitement grips the region.
Washington June 27 court martial of Captain Lyon of the Twenty fifth Infantry resumed at Fort Myer Judge Advocate Captain Howland expected to rest its case by luncheon. Captain Murphy to present Lyons defense on falsification of ordinance returns tied to the Brownsville shooting affray. Defense likely to take two or three days with a decision possible by Wednesday.
Ignacio Montoya, 18, hurled from his wagon when it struck a Buena Vista street car corner in Concho streets last evening. Two wheels passed over his body, yet he sprang up, chased the runaway team for a block, and brought them to a halt as bystanders watched in relief. He had been delivering watermelons to the camp yard.
Special Dispatch Marshall Texas June 27 Seven persons injured four seriously when a short turn sent a party auto onto a sidewalk. Miss Gladys Prickett of New Orleans suffered chest injuries and a broken arm. Miss Inez Watts driven, Miss Alieen Sheehan slight, Tom Brown of Wolfe City internal injuries, Homer Brendergast internal injuries and crushed foot, Byron Blalock broken ankle and internal injuries, John Milton Clark slight. J Harry Blocker, bank president of Wolfe City, turned the high speed lever by mistake while attempting the emergency brake and escaped unharmed.
Washington June 27 President rested as Speaker Cannon echoed his plan to return next session for the Republican majority to decide who shall be speaker. The veteran lawmaker made the farewell call at the White House and repeated his public pledge.
A city publicity drive asks non resident property owners to contribute funds for advertising San Antonio. A special committee led by Ben M Hammond canvasses for money to promote the city and keep it prominent in the south. Letters have been sent to outside corporations with city interests requesting their share of the expense.
A Mexican contractor allegedly drew 1400 from the addison owners and vanished after promising payment to 110 workers on a West End addition. The workers gathered in Main Plaza, condemned the loss of two weeks' work, and formed a committee to go to the grand jury.
In Galveston Texas a man matching Joseph Wendling's description, sought for the Alma Kellner murder in Louisville Kentucky, was captured after Fort Bend County Sheriff Winscom trailed him. The prisoner, who claims to be H F Stewart, gave conflicting travel stories. Sheriff Winscom says he believes the suspect is Wendling. Louisville Chief of Detectives Carney is expected to arrive from San Antonio to view the prisoner.
Officials say fundraising for the publicity drive will come from managers of oil companies and cigar concerns that profit from city consumers, highlighting how local revenue sources support the effort.
The New York dispatch notes a mass departure of sporting men to Reno ahead of the Jeffries versus Johnson championship. Most expect Jeffries to win though wagering will shift to ringside for latest fight form signals. Managers Madden and O Rourke back Jeffries, while Joe Humphreys roots for Jeffries but doubts the outcome.
Madrid June 27 The Vatican’s latest note to the Spanish government is treated as an ultimatum requiring withdrawal of the June 11 decree before talks on revising the concordat can proceed. Republicans and radicals organize across Spain in counter manifestos against Catholic agitation.
In Bilboa on June 27 Republicans clashed with Carlists as they entered club rooms. Police intervened but the confrontation resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries among participants.
A religious riot erupted before the Basque club quarters in San Sebastian on June 27. Municipal guards charged the disturbers, killing one man and wounding seven others.
Three robbers attacked Ogden Short Line No 1 at Five Points early this morning robbing all passengers and beating a woman and a foreign man. The rear brakeman was twice fired at but unharmed. Express car searched for money. sheriff Wilson and a posse pursue the trio.
The Travis Park Methodist church hosted the regular Monday meeting with Rev. S. H. C. Burgin absent as president. vice president presided. Reports from preachers indicated progress in San Antonio church work with many new additions, growing church rolls, and several new churches under construction.
Beverly Mass June 27 One of President Tafts cars driven by his son Robert A Taft ran over and seriously injured an Italian laborer. At the hospital it was reported the workmans skull was fractured.
Washington June 27 Justice Girard of the New York supreme court has been chosen by President Taft as a civil delegate of the United States to the Mexico centennial independence celebration in Mexico City this September. Two others will be selected.
In Kansas City on June 27 the Glidden tour left for Omaha with a 242 mile run planned. Circuit Judge Seehorn refused to issue an injunction against the tour officials, ruling the court lacks jurisdiction. Max Harry of the Harry Automobile company had sought penalties against the officials, alleging favoritism toward the Chalmers car at his expense.
W H Bostwick, who killed three men and wounded three at his Ocilla area home, died early this morning after a national guard raid. Sheriff McInnis also died. Five children were rescued unharmed as soldiers entered the barricaded residence at dawn. Bostwick lay unconscious and dying.
Charles Muth a sanitary inspector heard a suspicious noise while picking a flower at his home 406 Town Street Sunday evening. A five foot rattlesnake with seventeen rattles struck at him and narrowly missed burying its fangs in his right arm before he wrestled the deadly reptile away with a spade.
