Special Dispatch from Austin Texas dated June 4 reports a Jefferson Davis birthday celebration by the Daughters of the Confederacy. The program included prayers, songs such as Dixieland and My Old Kentucky Home, an oration by Dr. Bishop, poems including The Uncrowned King and Jefferson Davis, and a benediction.
In Monroe Michigan on June 4 a grand unveiling honored George A Custer with President Taft Governor and numerous guests present. Michigan Indiana and Ohio sent large delegations as veterans of Custers Michigan cavalry attended. Col George G Briggs praised the monument and Mrs Custer pulled the ropes revealing the statue amid cheers and a Confederate Star Spangled Banner. Taft praised Custer while Senator William Aden Smith delivered the principal oration detailing character patriotism and devotion to country.
A runty calf led to the arrest of Menges who waived examination and was bound over on a theft charge. His brother then aided peace officers, revealing another man, George Zwally, as the true thief. Zwally was jailed on bond awaiting further action while Menges was released.
Reports from Bluefields Nicaragua say insurgents under General Mena at Rama defeated General Chavarria's government troops, forcing a flight with many dead. General Chamorro reinforced Rama. Mena demanded surrender, pursuing escape attempts for three hours before Maé rız forces collapsed. Consul Moffat also proclaimed vessels entering Bluefields must pay duties to Estrada's government, hailed as a victory by revolutionaries.
Washington dispatch reports General Mena routed General Chavarria at El Recreo with Chavarria’s forces destroyed. Chavarria fled with no guard left. none of the army survived to cover the retreat.
Dr Frederick Terrell president of the San Antonio school board announced plans to convene a meeting within days to address alleged violations of the anti nepotism law. Edward W Tynan, a top board member and head of the finance committee, says he would resign if his continued service harms other members or his sister's position. Don A Bliss said his recommendation of Miss Lizzie Tynan for re election followed 1907 laws and that her re election could not be abolished, though he doubts the board’s authority to reject her per 1909 judgment.
Sam B. Cooper of Beaumont former Texas congressman arrived in Washington on June 4 to confer with friends and officials and will assume duties as customs appraiser of the port of New York next Tuesday.
Hugo Steiner aged 42 died at his Sabine street home yesterday funeral held this morning He was a well known tinner of the city and is survived by a widow and four children.
Washington June 4 The state department was officially advised the movement of the Ecuadorean army from the Peruvian frontier began yesterday and was in progress today.
After taxes, property owners may visit city hall to assess property for the new year. June July and August are the assessment months led by City Assessor Shiner and deputies. Poll taxes are due anytime and citizens have already paid 1435 poll taxes. The law allows paying without three city trips, but crowds may form.
The office of City Collector C Villemain will stay closed until next Wednesday. The annual and monthly collector reports cannot be completed before then. The closure began Thursday morning to allow uninterrupted report compilation. Belated taxpayers and dog owners sought handling at city hall but were turned away without results.

Chicago June 4 Lee Browne Ottawa NL legislative minority leader awaiting trial on bribery was surrendered by his bondsman Alderman Powers. He was taken into custody by the sheriff and habeas corpus proceedings are expected. Browne's bond stood at 15000 dollars.
Assistant Census Supervisor Willard F. E. Simpson sent the last of the city census returns to Washington that night. The tabulated report should be ready by June 15. Only one enumerator in Burnett county is still at work though sixteen districts are paused awaiting reports. It is expected all information will be in within a few days and vouchers for enumerator salaries will be ready by June 16 as the Census Bureau completes work in San Antonio.
Rev J H Collard campaign manager for Poin Dexiter announces appointments for Brady on Monday night June 6 Eden on Tuesday night June 7 and says further engagements will follow Collard will speak next week and then Cone Johnson will appear in his own engagements.
St Louis Missouri June 4 Attorney General Major said he will file quo warranto action against certain meat packers within the next month charging them with violation of Missouri anti trust laws.
Geneva June 4 The Young Egyptian committee denounces Theodore Roosevelts London speech praising a firmer British policy in Egypt calling it an insult to Europe and Egypt and to civilization. The protest predicts heightened sentiment among Egyptian youths against colonial policy.
J W Hebbard a young newspaper man is sent to Huntsville for four years for forgery after passing forged checks at the St. Anthony hotel in San Antonio and at a Houston bank. J W Cronen receives two years for forgery. Freeman Mullens is sentenced to two years for horse theft. All are part of a larger transfer of prisoners to the penitentiary in handcuffs from the International depot.
A. B. Storey, chairman of the state democratic executive committee, announced this morning the appointment of J. W. Parker of Reeves County as chairman of the democratic committee of the Seventieth judicial district.
San Antonio hosts the convention's final and busiest session this afternoon inviting genial delegates to return next year. Other cities also bid, signaling strong regional interest and competition for hosting duties.

Two young blind boys named Henry Elmendorf 12 and Emmett Charle Hoey age unknown were brought to police headquarters after arriving from Austin where they attended the State School for the Blind. They hoped relatives would meet them at the depot for a three month vacation but no trace was found by 2 PM.
