San Antonio closes a banner year with 3530 building permits valued at 3 451 948 dollars the highest in city history. Building Inspector Teo M Deilmann says the 1909 figures top 1908 and 1907 and predict 1910 will shatter the record with millions in planned improvements.
Spectators are promised more fun than a circus as a parade of poormobiles, replicas of famous racers, takes place on S. Flores ending near the military installation. The event aims to showcase ingenuity and entertainment for onlookers tomorrow.
A California special on the Chicago Rock Island Pacific rail line derailed three miles east of Trenton Missouri. The tourist sleeping car burned with 12 known dead and up to 30 feared. Firemen and passengers struggled to rescue those trapped as Pullman cars burned. Injuries included multiple broken legs and head injuries among passengers. The crash occurred after the engine left the track at high speed and rolled over.

Two well known cattlemen are today registered at the Southern hotel. One is John R. Johnston of Midland with his wife, here for business and pleasure. The other is H. B. Holmes of Marfa, also lodging at the hotel.
Wallace Tillinghast, the Worcester aviator known as the mysterious flier, promises to show his airship at the upcoming aero show. He claims nocturnal flights with a powerful headlight and a secret landing place unseen by the public.
Associated Press reports New York December 31 that January cotton options were nearly all bought, firming the market. By mid morning January futures rose to 16.86, a new high for the season, with later quotes showing a net gain of about 3 to 7 points.
Special Dispatch from Waco Texas reports a city commission resolution forbidding city employes especially the fire department from drinking intoxicants was brought before the commission and referred to Pig Commissioner John Wright.
