Seth M. Walker, speaker of Tennessee's House, telegraphed President Wilson declaring the men of Tennessee will not surrender honest convictions for political expediency. An 11 year old Ruth Holmes, daughter of Mr and Mrs A W Holmes of 1035 Denver Boulevard, was found Thursday night with an elderly janitor after an extensive search. Detectives Kerry and Lyons located them in a camp in a pasture along the Salado about seven miles east of San Antonio. The janitor denies involvement. The girl said the man lured her away with a trip for other children, took her to Denver Helzets Park, then toward the Salado before being found. The father retained counsel and a prosecution may follow.
Charging coal miners appealed to international officers, with Alexander Mowat president of the Kansas and Ohio miners union saying he was not concerned with the strike. He would judge on what to do and planned to attend the July conference in Cleveland called by President Wilson on mine wage changes.
PF R oig a soldier of the 2 Supply Train at Camp Travis was robbed of $9 by two highway men near Maverick and West Laurel Streets. He described two assailants wearing black caps who struck him and escaped with the money. The incident occurred around 2 AM and the victim arrived at the Main Avenue and Romana Street fire station about 40 minutes later. No arrests have been made.
London Aug 14 Sir Henry Gratian Bellew resigning Irish posts said the British army of occupation in Ireland is devastating the country. He charged that soldiers wreck Irish towns ruin industry and act without camouflage. McHeary added the claim in a volatile statement about occupation policy.
A man, described as unknown Mexican, reportedly died after ingesting grape juice mixed with wood alcohol. Emergency crews ferried him to Monterey Hospital, but he allegedly remained alive upon ambulance arrival. the body was turned over to the Riebe Undertaking Company as authorities pursued identification.

Disarmament at Tlahualilo Durango is postponed for a week as Gen Eugenio Martinez and a government rep return to Mexico City to confer with President De la Huerta. Martinez reportedly opposes a plan to keep Villa’s armed retainers while adding 130 more bandits to farm duties, noting Villa would still command about 200 retainers and could resume fighting at will. government already agrees to allow 250 Villa officers to retain weapons. New York Aug 18 Manager John J McGraw of the Giants told the district attorney Unger he knows nothing about how Slavin was injured. He described Slavin lying on the sidewalk with a fractured skull after an early Sunday taxi ride with McGraw and another person.
A well dressed unidentified man was found ashore in Lake Michigan near Eighth Street with throat cut ear to ear and four knife wounds. Police believe the body was dressed after stabbing and note jewelry and a strong amount of money on the person.
Governor Cox, speaking at the Democratic state convention in Heling West Virginia, pledged to implement after March 4 a concrete plan to support the League of Nations and avert future wars. He criticized Republican leadership, urged square dealing in miners disputes, and proposed a $2 billion reduction in government expenditures and taxes. He warned of a campaign finance–driven bias and stressed Democratic moral co operation to protect national interests while maintaining economic stability.
At Aris on August 14 Denis Cochin socialist leader warned that any French government move to mobilize for war would trigger a revolution. The Socialist press carried a direct appeal to French labor not to permit France to wage war on Russia, urging resistance amid a tumult of references to Russia Poland and past wars.
