Isham Krantz, a lazy scammer turned moneylender, grows rich by exploiting debtors. the town’s fortune favors him as he pockets wealth from others.
A fragmentary dialogue recalls bones and a ruined cabin with talk of ghosts. Simpkins insists spirits linger, while Mat Coffin argues the idea is nonsense, reflecting a haunted frontier mood. Named speakers anchor the scene.
Simpkins and Coffin explore the Stony Gulch near the old crater at dusk. They hear a metallic clink below the shaft and encounter a human head buried in the trail, with Simpkins vanishing into the darkness as Coffin vows to return to town. Coffin remains skeptical about spirits as Simpkins grows convinced that more exists on Earth than he admitted.
In Tumbletown Hans Meineka hosts a crowd that follows reports of the spirit of Bones. Coffin leads an excavation, rope and windlass strain as the bucket descends into a mossy shaft. The return is empty except for a few toads, and the town mourns that Mat has sacrificed himself.

In Tumbletown the phantom miners Bones and Coffin haunt Stony Gulch as a thriving town grows around a grand quartz mansion built by John Revere. A writ of attachment lands amid feasting. Bones reveals himself as new owner in a dramatic turn, trading debt for a sparkling, cursed estate.
