A vivid reminiscence of a rural upstate village and its printing shop the Black River Gazette era. It depicts the old village scene the loom press room the editor apprentice and publisher at work the ramage press the village carrier boy and daily publication rituals amid forests streams and apples.
Over days before the eruption Etna’s sky was overcast and heat oppressive. An earthquake leveled Nicolosi, two great chasms opened, ash fell forming Monte Rosso a 450 foot hill, and a lava flow up to four miles wide buried fourteen towns. It reached the sea forming a six hundred yard mole, altered rivers, and left twenty seven thousand homeless. Subsequent eruptions in 1787 1811 and 1819 were less devastating as lava spared cultivated lands.
