Over days before the eruption Etna’s sky was overcast and heat oppressive. An earthquake leveled Nicolosi, two great chasms opened, ash fell forming Monte Rosso a 450 foot hill, and a lava flow up to four miles wide buried fourteen towns. It reached the sea forming a six hundred yard mole, altered rivers, and left twenty seven thousand homeless. Subsequent eruptions in 1787 1811 and 1819 were less devastating as lava spared cultivated lands.
