Auto Ferry Charge Is Held Excessive By State Commission
Cape Charles March 31 Charges for transporting automobiles between Norfolk and Cape Charles by the Pennsylvania Railroad were found unreasonable. The State Corporation Commission, led by Commissioner Lester Hooker, ordered rate cuts of 2 to 60 percent based on car weight across the three ferry boats. Current rates by the New York Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad, a Pennsylvania subsidiary, are 8 7s per car for up to 2000 pounds and $11.02 per car for over 2400 pounds. The commission ruled rates should not exceed $4.73 for under 1000 pounds and $8.28 for 1000 to 4900 pounds. Complaint originated with the ferry rates previously filed with the commission.
