Knoxville June 24 An army of experts will testify in the trial of high school teacher J T Seobes indicted on religious questions. Defense counsel Clarence Derrew and Bainbridge Caley arrived with their team as proceedings opened. The case may drag on as the state debates expert witnesses and legal strategy.
Chicago reports an active search for Jack Durand a 26 year old adopted son of Mr and Mrs Scott Durand Lake Forest millionaires named as leader in a string of holdups and burglaries. Confessions from three youths point to Durand in crimes on the Pacific Coast and elsewhere including a taxicab hold up and a robbery at Armour and Company where a home was robbed last September. Durand was said to be in Los Angeles with several thousand dollars in stolen goods linked to the cases.
The Rev William J Hafey was consecrated the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Raleigh North Carolina at the cathedral. Archbishop Michael J Curley presided with consecrators Bishop Thomas M O Leary and Bishop Michael J Keyes. Hafey, native of the Springfield diocese, will assume duties July 1. Family members attended the ceremony in Chicopee and St Augustine will preside at Raleigh installation. Benediction tonight marks Hafey’s first ecclesiastical function in Selman.
