In Virginia Valleys a dam burst sent a torrent of lime mud through Sableville burying homes and people. Nine bodies recovered and many injured, some not expected to survive. Victims largely attended a Christmas Eve party at Harry Prater’s house as the dam failed with little warning.
An expedition of fourteen men under Captain Norman Wilkin will sail the three masted frigate Marian from Appledore on New Year’s Day. They plan to mimic Drake and follow the route around Magellan’s Strait and up the Pacific coast in five years.
