Death by own action of Judge Mayo on Baltimore steamer

Norfolk va Sept 15 Judge Robert A Mayo of Westmoreland county father of Robert Mayo with Judge Garrison's certificate as a Congressman died by self inflicted gunshot on a Baltimore steamer after revealing he was coerced into political work he loathed. A watchman interrupted the act but Mayo shot himself. The era of Boss Mahone is condemned as dishonorable.

Richmond Va Sept 16 Major Peyton G Hale of Grayson county Democratic nominee for the senatorial district including Grayson and Floyd counties is stricken with paralysis at his Grayson home. He may retire from the campaign and a new candidate could be nominated. Also noted: a North Carolina railroad project styled Wilmington Wrightsville and Onslow Rail road is owned entirely by Black investors with white subscribers allowed, track along the coast shows six miles of road bed completed.

Georgia House Honors Third Maine Regiment Support

In Rockingham and nearby counties excitement rose over miscegenation cases. Two white girls fled with Black men, pursued by relatives armed with shotguns. One couple was arrested after a chase. lynching talk followed. Nine similar cases reported in the region.

Civil Rights on the Cars on the Louisville Express

An account from The Washington Post details a Sunday evening disturbance after the Louisville express train left Charlottesville. Passengers, including a young lady, faced seats being denied by four negro men prompting a scuffle between Mr. Sharp of Columbus Mississippi and the assailant Farrar who tried to draw a pistol. The altercation ended with Sharp beating the man, who later sought arrest in Washington but was discharged for lack of jurisdiction. Also reported: John Williams of Appomattox County confessed to horse theft near Liberty. eight cowboys from the McLain ranch in Colorado had a spree ending in killings and injuries. Brown's Iron Bitters praised for dyspepsia relief.

County Fair Hails Attendance and Strong Political Support

Our County Fair closed last Friday with good attendance and notable exhibits. Prominent Democrats Hon. Henry S. Trout and Hon. Jas. W. Marshall attended, drawing strong ovations and a predicted four hundred vote majority in November. Parts of the county suffered frost damaging crops. A railroad collision near Bonsack’s caused significant damage but no injuries. Prof. Miller offers art lessons. Seven Springs Mass advertised as a health tonic for complexions.
