Near Martinsville Henry county State says Charles Hairston, a burly young man, assaulted Miss Gouldin. He was arrested, indicted, tried and found guilty and sentenced to hang on the 20th of Jane. He is kept in Roanoke city jail for safety amid fears of lynching.
Advocates of a constitutional convention face solid opposition from Salem’s colored voters and Republican ranks. Speeches were read in several colored churches urging turnout to defeat the convention.
Senator Clarke forwards resignation to Montana Governor over alleged improper treatment. He proclaims innocence of corruption claims and cites personal privilege. Governor accepts and appoints Clarke to succeed himself.

Dr Oscar Wiley secretary of the Health Board reports the Newt mining area near Roanoke shows improvement with 24 cases dismissed. Norwich also improves and only one death has occurred, as Wiley is praised for decisive action and broad support from physicians and residents.
Mr L R Martin a well known young citizen of Norwich near Roanoke and a justice of the peace for his district died at his home last Monday morning from a malignant case of smallpox and other complications He was a married man and leaves a family to be pitied in their deep distress.

The Wythe Lead and Zinc Mine Company held its annual stockholders meeting at Austinville Monday last. Captain John C. Raper reported the mines and business in better condition than ever and earnings satisfactory to owners. The company has already paid 76,000 dollars in dividends since last July, and projections indicate at least 100,000 dollars in dividends for the year ending July next.
The 80 year old William Greenway, injured last week when he fell from a train near Christiansburg, is only slightly improved. Doctors fear brain injury from the hit, with him unconscious most of the time, briefly rational, then returning to stupor and strong fever.
