World War Hero Laid To Rest In East Roane County
Roy Whitmire, son of Mrs. C J Whitmire, arrived in Salem and his flag draped casket was moved to Oakey & Son funeral parlor for burial. Salem Post American Legion organized a military burial with caisson and firing squad. The deceased served in Co M 117 8th Division and died from Meuse Argonne wounds on October 3 1918. A large crowd attended as floral tributes and a Daughters of the Confederacy wreath were placed on the casket.
