Washington today confirmed the Cunningham coal land claims in Alaska have no legal standing and are ordered canceled. The decision by Interior Secretary Walter L. Fisher follows a government ruling that the 5,280 acre tract containing at least 68,000,000 tons of coal valued around 25 million dollars should revert to government ownership rather than pass to the Morgan Guggenheim syndicate under a disputed patent chain.

The annual Children’s Day exercises by the Salem Methodist Episcopal church were held in the church auditorium starting at 10 30 Sunday morning. The program titled Summer Voices featured processional God is Love prayers songs recitations and responsive readings by children from the primary department and Sunday School. Orphans Enjoy Joy Ride By Roanoke Salem Associations
Orphans from the Baptist and Lutheran Orphanages in Salem and from St Andrew's and Ebenezer in Roanoke rode in about fifty to sixty autos supplied by local owners. Salem children chose a Roanoke ball game or pictures and amusements. Roanoke orphans were hosted in Salem for several hours. Death of W. R. Johnston veteran railroad contractor
William Richard Johnston aged sixty four died Saturday at 10 30 of heart illness at Lewis Gale Hospital Roanoke after recent hospitalization. A Nelson county native and longtime Salem resident he earned a wide reputation as a railroad contractor in the South. He is survived by his wife and seven children including Mrs George M Cease Richmond Mrs Chapman Alderson New York Julia Johnson Salem Laslie Johnston New York W H Johnston Richlands Rexford and Stuart Johnston Salem. The body was moved by midnight train to Shipman Nelson County for burial.
