Roanoke Va June 23 public reply by O L Stearnes to accusations in Vinton about Woman Suffrage Confederate pensions judges and Norfolk and Western taxation. He supports a future referendum on women voting, cites pension and tax positions, and defends N W Railway finances while noting a 1913 net income.
Washington June 23 Robert Lansing counsellor of the State Department was named Secretary of State to succeed William Jennings Bryan. The appointment pleased cabinet members and many in the capital as Lansing, a lifelong Democrat, is renowned for his international law and diplomacy work. Bryan had hoped Lansing would be promoted. The president announced the offer and Lansing accepted before a brief rest in New Hampshire.
The Model Pharmacy creditors held a meeting before Referee in Bankruptcy R. Q. Mosby of Roanoke. On creditors’ motion, T. L. Keister was elected trustee and tasked to seek a private sale offer for the firm’s property.
Richmond Virginia day at the exposition widens the calendar with a July 8 parade and speeches. Governor Stu art will attend with staff and Richmond Light Infantry Blues as feats of drill and music. Patch of rural mail routes from Quarryville Pennsylvania starts July 1. Routes and needs surveys are under way across states with Oklahoma 42 Georgia 28 California 19 Texas 8 Florida 3 Pennsylvania 2 Louisiana 1. Minimum route length fifty miles and families served per route range from 130 to 470, averaging about three hundred.
