Roanoke College Begins Sixty-First Commencement
The Roanoke College 61st commencement held in the Tabernacle began Sunday June 7 at 11 am. Rev J A Singmaster delivered the baccalaureate sermon on Esther 42 14 with the College Church chorus providing music. Rev F G Gotwald spoke at the Young Men's Christian Association address. Monday featured field day sports and oratory contest with speakers including John H Falwell Irvin Harvey Roberts Kime and Eugene Brown. The alumni meeting followed with Prof Paul Nugent delivering the principal address on Education and Efficiency. Tuesday evening featured Dr C Alphonso Smith on American Literature as Viewed by Foreigners. Wednesday morning included graduation exercises with multiple degrees awarded and honors announced. The board announced new officers and reported finances.

Salam Town Council Holds Regular Monthly Meeting
Salam town council met in the ecouncil chamber on College avenue with all members present except Mr J J Lieavell. Reports from the Mayor treasurer and finance committees were accepted. Receipts for the month totaled 2586.83 and disbursements 267. A 2497.01 offset for unsettled DUIs was approved. Treasurer’s report showed fines of 115.70 collected. A license tax of 500 was imposed on fortune tellers even if only visiting briefly.

Aged Widow Assaulted Near Salem Seeks Justice
Walter Moore, a 20 year old black man, is jailed in Roanoke County for the assault on 64 year old widow Mrs. Sarah KE Patterson near Ash Bottom Salem. Patterson identified Moore in detail, including a torn shirt button, after he allegedly knocked and choked her into unconsciousness Sunday night.
