Historic school honors list named third through fourth grade students and higher class promotions. The roll includes many named pupils across grammar and primary grades with several named teachers and schools, reflecting a major end of term recognition.
New tax rules cut the intangibles rate to 65 cents per hundred in Roanoke County and Salem Town, down from 1.60 last year and 95 cents this year. The law urges taxpayers to list intangible property or face discovery taxation at 1.60, meaning paid rates of 9.50 per thousand for timely filers and 16.00 per thousand if discovered.
Salem Graded and High School held opening exercises with four declamation and four recitation contestants in the tabernacle amid rain.
