Government rules require discontinuing three month arrears to conserve paper. Subscribers three months behind must call to advance dates or risk loss of their subscriptions. Notices will be mailed first of next week. unpaid readers after July 15, 1918 will be dropped.
After months of dispute among Multnomah County drainage district No 1 and Peninsula district landowners over two dams on Columbia Slough and 8000 acres of overflow land, the Port of Portland Commission agrees to contract with the district to remove dams when the Port elects. A resolution affirms keeping a slough channel open between the Willamette River and Union Avenue to allow river vessels and towboats access for plants, with a public hearing conducted by Col Zinn of the Corps of Engineers.
Old Johnson, dining with friends on Christmas Eve, gets lost in a thick fog while returning home. He descends a flight of steps and asks a dim figure for directions, who cryptically replies that the stairs lead directly into pain. The note adds a line about soldiers and home pictures.
