Busy Building Boom In St Johns From This Week

Construction starts this week as Crook and Walton raise a 64 by 75 foot brick block for Bickner Bros next to the office. Frederick Leach begins a two story brick building with a bank vault and offices above. Black and Kerr remodel C C Woodhouse’s corner building to fireproof, and West Coast laundry becomes a rooming house. A D McDonald erects a brick two story front with lodge room above and stores behind, plus a large basement. St Johns Sash and Door expands to store stock and double business capacity.

Installation of Iron Foundry Near Hill Road in St Johns

A new iron foundry by Leach Bros of Portland rises beside the Hill road line bridge, with a six two foot molding shop and a three ton blast furnace already in place. The firm plans a seven ton furnace next spring, a full machine shop, a 12 ton steam hammer, and a stove works building to manufacture box stoves and asbestos clad heaters. A quiet home wedding in Portland united C. M. Salisbury and Miss Mary F. Hilde of St. Johns at 6 o clock Sunday evening. Rev. Cc. P. Gates officiated in the presence of near relatives. The bride wore a pretty gown and the couple plan to reside in Portland.

Powers Byrd union at Powers residence in St Johns

FP M Powers and Miss Rachel Byrd wed by Rev F L Young of the M B church at the Powers home in St Johns Wednesday of last week. A number of friends attended. A 7 pm luncheon followed. The couple plans to reside in Salem where Powers works as an engineer on the new railroad between Salem and Portland. Best wishes from local friends.

Corn Roast by Willamette River

A group of about twenty four young people held a traditional corn roast on the banks of the Willamette west of the mone mills Monday evening. A large bonfire, games, stories, and a sharp stick with corn were enjoyed. Sandwiches and fruit juice were served as the moonlight added to the atmosphere of a pleasant gathering.

Campling left Friday for Carlton where he has a bathing job. He intends to wrestle with the task and settle into the new role.
