The St Johns area faces a severe housing shortage as tenants scramble for every vacant dwelling. Builders cite higher costs for lumber hardware and labor, delaying new rental homes. Prospects point to continued growth as new industries arrive and more workers seek homes in St Johns.
Representative Keating of Colorado cites European bakeries using American wheat to sell bread far cheaper than in the United States. He notes 82 ounces of bread in Britain for 11 cents and 35 ounces in France, Italy, Belgium for 9, 8, and 11 cents respectively, while U S prices are higher. He argues profits by middlemen and freight raise costs and urges a food regulation to lower prices for workers.
The Army Y M C A offers education to soldiers in French Spanish and Russian with volunteer instructors. It also helps save money through deposits and a “Save Your Raise” campaign. The program aims to raise soldiers’ mental moral and financial standards for a higher postwar position.

Ross Parker aged about 32 and unmarried, son of E H Parker of St Johns, died at Airlie Oregon after a tree incident while felling timber. He stepped on moss on a wet lot, fell, and a broken tree part struck him. He was treated at a camp and then Dallas hospital, but died about 11 pm. Funeral held at Forest Grove Wednesday. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs E H Parker and four brothers T T H H S and J A Parker.
B F Belieu, recently in Yamhill for construction work, returned home with a sore foot that grew painful and led to blood poisoning. The illness halted work, but the poison progress has been checked and his foot improves while he uses a crutch. Philip Peterson, son of J T Peterson, a former St Johns resident, was injured badly when thrown from a Southern Pacific speeder, and he is recovering as he rides along with the aid of a leg brace.
In Daly's theatre district Eddie Foy pauses before Hitchcock posters. A passing bystander mocks Foy, praising Hitchcock as superior. Foy declares himself, and the young man reveals he is Hitchcock, prompting a sharp reinterpretation of ego and fame.
J Willis and family of Whit wood Court have ended a five week stay and returned home by auto. They report California roads in fine condition while Oregon roads are poor. Their son Benjamin, who joined them, stopped in San Francisco on the way back. he is a soldier on a 30 day furlough from Uncle Sam.

A. Widmer and Sone conducted a prominent auction at Gatton Farm on Wednesday drawing nearly 800 attendees. It was the largest livestock and dairy implement sale in years with a free dinner for guests. Auctioneer W. S. Wood of Vancouver Washington presided while J. N. Edlefsen served as clerk.
