A Chicago 1865 grocery list shows sugar 29¢ a pound and tea up to $2 a pound, with kerosene $1 a gallon and oatmeal 50c for four pounds. Similar 1870 Philadelphia prices include meat $1–$2 a pound and sugar $3 a pound, but currency depreciated and barter common. Optimists note prices fall after wars, yet today production must catch up with demand for lasting relief.
A local observer notes that a proposed large apartment house in St Johns depends on increasing the water supply. He cites August shortages on second floors for drinking and washing, and warns a big fire risk if the supply remains inadequate. He urges timely action to enlarge mains before next summer.

The city of Portland files with the Oregon Public Service Commission to extend Light and Power Co lines from Fessenden and Jersey to the St Johns terminal. The 1.125 mile route would cost 30 000 to 86 000 per mile, creating 400 plus jobs and aiding seaport development while serving workers with limited transportation near the terminal. The plan routes north on Jersey to St Johns, east to Kellogg, then north to Portland’s northern boundary to the terminal, with classification as an interurban line acceptable to the petitioners.

On Monday September 8 1919 the Multnomah County Board of Equalization will meet at the County Assessor’s office in the Portland courthouse to examine the 1919 assessment rolls and correct valuation descriptions or quantities of lands and property. If errors or double assessments are found the board will correct them and owners may appear. If any assessable property is not listed the board will assess at full cash value.
