St Johns Sanitarium Opens in Former Hurlbert House

St Johns now runs a general hospital or sanitarium named St Johns Sanitarium. Located at the corner of Chicoa street and Smith Avenue in the former E C Hurlbert house, it is owned by Calef Bros of Portland and managed by Mrs E R Sully with Dr C C Boyer in charge. The facility houses twelve patients, a first rate operating room, new furnishings, strict sanitation, and a capable heating system. It has already begun admitting cases, with five to six patients, and plans for expansion if demand warrants.

Who May Vote Tuesday in November Referendum Election

Collision on Willamette River Narrows Between LaCenter and Shaver

A steamer LaCenter and the rowboat Shaver collided near St Johns on the Willamette River. The LaCenter was nearly cut in two and sank beached near the St Johns Shipbuilding Company. Five crew and two passengers escaped to the Shaver’s bow. the Shaver towed the damaged vessel ashore for repairs. Reports cite signal confusion, with the Shaver bound from Portland and LaCenter from Woodland, Wash.
