Magnificent Showing At Fourth Liberty Loan Drive

The Fourth Liberty Loan drive at the local shipyard raised 810000 with 674600 from workers and 135500 from management. Per capita pledges averaged about 120 per man, and nearly every yard worker participated. Marie Dressler drew in 30600 in about twenty minutes, aided by a return visit and a poem Viva La France. The Slackers Monument and Kaiser caricature provoked wide amusement as the drive neared its 750000 milestone.

Mill Destroyed by Fire at East St Johns Plant

Fire started near a switchboard in a shed and despite a watchman sustaining burns, efforts to fight the blaze failed due to soft mud choking hoses and lack of nearby hydrants. Wind spread the fire through the mill and 75000 feet of unfinished lumber. heavy rain later helped save nearby cottages. The plant employed about 20 men and J Gritamacher says rebuild plans depend on salvaging machinery.
