Monday's council meeting covered dock encroachment findings and street bid calls for Catlin Lively and Thompson streets. The city debated a 15 mill Portland comparable tax cap and warned against higher St Johns levies, urging economical fiscal management to avoid annexation pressures.
Water works pump ran all Saturday night but could not keep up with leakage from the tank. Sunday morning bath water was scarce as mains ran dry. The Scott switchboard stayed busy answering questions. It took hours to repair but by eleven oclock service began to stabilize and most distant areas received limited supply.
The O R and N railway has filed suit against M W Gatton to force sale of part of his farm for a proposed line on the Peninsula. The disputed tract sits at the city’s northern edge near bluffs above large sloughs. both K N and Northern Pacific have surveys there. Gatton would sell but rejects offers of 500 dollars per acre and 450 dollars per acre for the full tract.
Augustus A Hurlbert born February 20 1839 in St Lawrence County New York died in St Johns at 730 PM November 14 1900s. He enlisted 1861 in Company F 1st regiment volunteer infantry served three years fought at Stone River Murfreesboro and other battles then did secret service work to war’s end. He was honorably discharged and assisted in Booth capture after Lincoln’s assassination. Postwar he worked in lumber in Wisconsin then moved to this city about two years ago. Surviving relatives include a wife a daughter and three sons with eldest in Wisconsin. Funeral at Methodist Church at 1 PM Thursday with burial at Columbia Cemetery.
