Against Occupation Tax at Commercial Association Meeting

A Wednesday evening gathering of the Commercial Association discussed the occupation tax with strong opposition. Salaries drew criticism, noting 33 percent for the treasurer here versus 1 percent elsewhere, and a city attorney cost of 720 dollars yearly against lower caps in larger towns. A motion opposed the occupation tax by a 20 to 2 vote. Debate also covered debt for a city hall, with most opposing bonds beyond real needs, while favoring M. J. Holebrook’s soap offer. The event ended with a sense of mystery and hints of forthcoming Willamette races.
