The newly formed Ladies' Auxiliary shows promise and urges the city council to declare the dumping ground near the city dock a public nuisance and to abate it. They urge residents to clean yards, fix sidewalks, and beautify homes, noting health and prosperity depend on a cleaner, neater city.
A Port land crowd of about 36 rode the electric line to Beaverton where the boys beat the Beaverton team 27 to 25 and the girls held firm. many say the boys benefited from practice while the girls were praised for restraint. March 8 James John second team edged Vernon 17 to 15 in Bickner Hall. The school looks forward to a strong showing on the new gym floor and hopes James John wins on home courts.
Mrs Had a Good Time Mrs Howard Windle and Miss Josie Thor entertained the Crescent club at 500 on Thursday afternoon last week at Mrs Windles home. A pleasant afternoon was reported with many members present including Mrs T H Cochran Mrs F W Valentine and others. First prize went to Mrs Wills with second to Mrs Valentine. Refreshments were served.
A Portland clipping reports rapid west side expansion with a $3,000,000 Portland Gas and Coke plant and new industrial sites. The Lakeview Realty Associates sold a 55 acre tract for $78,000, value rising as West Side residences and industry grow. The Episco equal plans for a $200,000 hall and school building.
A strong Oregon representation traveled to San Francisco to participate in selecting the exhibit site for the Panama Pacific International Exposition. The party included top state leaders and was joined by many from the Oregon Development League. Pennell of the St Johns Commercial Club accompanied the delegation and will report on the trip after about ten days away.
At a Commercial Club board meeting on Monday the inspectors will be asked to enforce spraying of fruit trees in St Johns this year. Citizens note neglect and call for strict action to spray or cut down infested trees to prevent menace to the community.
A meeting in San Francisco on April 2 will launch a regional movement uniting Rose Festival Portland Seattle Potlatch Tacoma Montamara Festa Spokane Apple Show Vancouver and others. Representatives from California fairs will attend to discuss advertising and cooperation for national events, with no concrete plan yet offered. The St Johns Sweet Pea Exhibition is noted as overlooked in the roster.

The Simmons home at 726 Oswego Street hosted a March 7 gathering in honor of Mrs. E. A. Simmons first birthday. Family and friends enjoyed refreshments, music, and storytelling with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. BE Simmons, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Oberlin, Miss Luella Schmaling, Harry and Lewis Simmons, Edwin M. Meyer, Kenneth Simmons, and Miss Vesta Simmons.
Revival services start March 19 at 7 45 p m at the Baptist church with Rev A C Saxton preaching nightly except Saturday. Saxton is described as a sterling Christian character and strong evangelistic preacher. All are welcome.

A list of nominees for mayor recorder treasurer city attorney and council posts from recent primaries shows incumbents and several challengers. New filings include Chas Bredeson for mayor and O J Gatameyer for attorney with socialist candidates A W Vincent Perrine Stokes and Gee. More filings expected before March 21 with election April 1 looming.

At Tuesday’s meeting Mayor Couchpa presided with full attendance. The council granted Knowles & Kanouse a 60 day extension on South Gresham improvements with bondsmen consent. Several bids and ordinances on street hard-surfacing and city dock security were considered, including demolition of curb at South Crawford and a garbage removal contract awarded to J. H. Knowles.
A surprise party was held Thursday evening at Miss Emma Matthews home to celebrate J C Brooks birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs Brooks and many friends who enjoyed cards games and refreshments of ice cream and wafers.
The city faces a potential setback to a $12,000 park land purchase if Nancy Caples refuses to dedicate sixty feet of her property and agree to hard surfacing. Officials expect a mutual agreement by next Tuesday to keep the April ballot question alive, else the proposal may die.
The White City will receive its charter on March 6 at 7 30 p m. Everything will be white including booths dresses and decorations. Visitors will sup together at 8 o clock. City guides will be at street corners. Music will be played at intervals. The event is held in M W A hall by the Ladies Aid Evangelical Church.

The G A R expresses lively interest in its upbuilding. every son or grandson should become a member.
