Wasco Steamer First Wooden Ship From Northwest for Emergency Fleet
The Wasco, built at the Grant Smith Porter yard in St Johns, Portland, is the first wooden steamer ordered by the Emergency Fleet Corporation to enter service. Launched February 17, she embodies Oregon craftsmanship with Oregon timber and workers, 286 feet long, 46 feet beam, 24 feet draft, 8600 deadweight tons, speed 13 mph, and a massive yard complex supporting 4000 workers.
