In St Johns the West Coast Laundry under J. K. Johnson provides 15 to 20 local jobs with a $200 weekly payroll. The plant, near a fire station, struggles with water access and rapid overflow from cesspools while handling orders from Portland, urging community support to sustain the business.
Local report describes two smooth operators visiting houses, taking exterior photos claiming insurers want images for policy work. Days later residents receive prints and a sales offer of two for seventy five cents pushing painting services by Moe and Clark of Saint Johns.
A new Board of Trade in St Johns begins operations with widespread card campaigns. Half a hundred thousand free cards tout the city and its nine miles of scenery and five cent fare to the Portland rail link. The effort aims to boost local industries and housing by public outreach and neighborly courtesy.
St Johns and vicinity continue to attract builders and buyers. With numerous homes and cottages rising on Salem Jersey and Adams Additions, investors like F W Valentine and N H Suitter push new residences, riverfront projects, and commercial plans near Burlington Crawford streets, while buyers like A D McDonald and J G Kliewer reinforce confidence in the district.
The noon July 26 ceremony at the bride's parents home in Hillsboro united Manley B. Everett and Miss Maud Hamilton. Rev. C. L. Hamilton led the Methodist Episcopal service as the couple left for St. Johns to begin their life together in a home at the corner of Ivanhoe and Tacoma Streets.
Rev and Mrs EB McVicker attended a wedding in Ridgefield on Tuesday where Ina Simpson daughter of R Simpson and Charles Maxwell a railroad man of Fairbury Nebraska were married. The ceremony occurred at noon on Wednesday and the couple went to Mr Maxwell's home in Fairbury. The bride is Louie Simpson's sister now residing in St Johns.
St Johns Homestead No 1221 held its first meeting at Bickner's Hall last week. Many attended. Officers renewed pledges and filled roles. Four new members joined, Mr and Mrs P Peterson among them, confirming the group organized as a new Homestead.
